Slab granite above a ventilation hood Description

Slab Granite (http://tanbrown.org) above a ventilation hood

I have a piece of leftover slab Granite (http://tanbrown.org) from our recent kitchen remodel that I would like to use to run on either side of our ventilation hood.  The piece is not quite big enough to go all the way to the ceiling and (http://maplered.com) we would like to use 1" brushed stainless steel Tiles (http://www.g682.net) (in a 12" grid) in the middle between the existing Granite (http://tanbrown.org) that runs to the bottom of the hood.  The Granite (http://tanbrown.org) to go on either side would be 13" wide x 20" tall with the s/s Tiles (http://www.g682.net) doing the 13" wide (max) - 3" wide (min) at the base of the triangle and (http://maplered.com) 9" tall.  The s/s Tiles (http://www.g682.net) are only 1/2" deep and (http://maplered.com) the Granite (http://tanbrown.org) is 2 1/2" deep.  My questions are:  1. Is there any structural/code problem with this idea? (Phoenix, AZ area); 2. Would one use backerboard/masonite/ or what to make up the depth between the Tiles (http://www.g682.net) and (http://maplered.com) the Granite (http://tanbrown.org) ?; 3. If I could find someone to cut the slab into the pieces I want, would this be something that a person with average skills (but lots of enthusiasm  Smiley) try themselves?  4.  If no, could you give me a very rough price range on what this type of job might run if we have all of the Material (http://g654.org) s?  Thanks!
